Latin name: Asclepias syriaca. Plant 18" apart in full sun in well-drained soil of any type; tolerates poor soil. This herbaceous perennial grows 3-4' in height and 2' wide, and self-sows freely, sometimes invasively. Flowers produce warty seed pods 2-4" inches long that split when ripe to cast many fine seeds. Attracts pollinators, especially monarch butterflies as it feeds caterpillars. Is toxic to humans and animals.
